Every mutual fund scheme has its own NAV and the units allotted are based on the closing NAV of the day you place your investment. Simply put, NAV is the cost of a single unit (of that particular fund)
NAV is short for Net Asset Value. When you invest in a mutual fund, you are allotted units worth your investment. Let’s say, you have invested Rs 1000 in a fund whose NAV was Rs 20 on the day you made the investment. Now you will be allotted 50 units(1000/20) in that particular fund. The NAVs change everyday (or at least every business day). Let’s suppose, after a month the NAV of this fund has rose to Rs 23. Now the value of your investment is Rs 1150 (Remember you have 50 units with you and now the value of each is Rs 23).
Now there is a little complication to this. BSE usually closes around 3 pm everyday. There will be cut-off times for each platform that you invest in. (eg. I do my investments in scheme and their cut off time 2 pm). This means, if you invest today in scheme before 2 pm, you will be allotted the units based on today’s closing day NAV. Any investments made post 2 pm, the units will be allotted based the closing day NAV of tomorrow (or the next BSE working day).
The Net Asset Value (NAV) of a mutual fund is the price at which units of a mutual fund are bought or sold. It is the market value of the fund after deducting its liabilities. The value of all units of a mutual fund portfolio are calculated on a daily basis, from this all expenses are then subtracted. The result is then divided by the total number of units the resultant value is the NAV. NAV is also sometimes referred to as Net Book Value or book Value. Let’s discuss its calculation in a bit more detail.
NAV indicates the market value of the units in a fund. So, it helps an investor keep track of the performance about the mutual fund. An investor can calculate the actual increase in the value of their investment by determining the percentage increase in the mutual fund NAV. NAV, therefore, gives accurate information about the performance about the mutual fund.
